First Lady

Oberon Matheny

Lady Oberon Matheny was born and raised in Indianapolis, Indiana. She is the youngest of five children.  Her mother, Louise Marie Brannon, was a life-long educator who embraced the Montessori Method of learning.  Her father, John Ward, was a legally-blind attorney who supported civil rights cases back in the 60’s.  She is also the adopted daughter of Lawrence D & Norita Scott, of Indianapolis, and is joined to five brothers and two sisters in her adopted family.  Sister Matheny is married to District Elder Edward C. Matheny, who is a native of Indianapolis, Indiana and the founding pastor of Berea Apostolic Faith Church in Stone Mountain Georgia.  She is a proud mother of five grown children and joyful grandmother of ten grandchildren.

Sister Matheny was born again; baptized in Jesus Name and filled with the precious gift of the Holy Ghost in June 1992, at Grace Apostolic Church, under the ministry of the late Bishop Morris E. Golder.  At that time, Oberon was a full-time college student with a full-time job, raising two boys.  However, she was careful to make God her first priority.  From the beginning, Sister Oberon was a faithful member of Grace, attending Tuesday’s new saint’s class and prayer, Wednesday bible study, Friday saints meeting, Sunday school, morning worship and Sunday evening services.  When the doors were open, she was there.  As she put God first, God blessed her life.  She graduated magna cum laude, which is the 2nd highest level of excellence awarded to a college graduate.  Not only that, it was at Grace church that she met her soon-to-be husband, Elder Edward C. Matheny.  They were married at Grace in October 1994.  The following year, Elder Matheny was called by God to start a church in Stone Mountain, Georgia.  In 1996, with the blessing of Bishop Golder, the Matheny family moved to Stone Mountain Georgia with their five children, to start Berea Apostolic Faith Church.  By the Spirit and grace of God, they continue united and fortified to serve the LORD.

As First Lady of Berea Apostolic Faith Church, Sister Matheny leads by example.  She enjoys church!  She serves in the capacities of Church Administrator, Treasurer, Sunday School Teacher, and Praise Team member.  She’s often working behind the scenes to support her pastor and the household of faith.  Whatever her hands find to do, she endeavors to execute with attention to detail and a spirit of excellence. She loves the people of God!  She’s been blessed to be a blessing.  She appreciates simplicity, modesty, integrity and genuineness.

Sister Oberon retired from Delta Air Lines, where she worked within the SAP Center of Expertise, leading a dedicated team responsible for providing software support in a very fast-paced, goal-oriented, and project-centric environment.

Sister O supports her local community.  Over the years she’s served as a VITA volunteer;  DeKalb County School volunteer, PTA treasurer, and Parent Board member; Girl Scout troop volunteer; Habitat for Humanity Build volunteer & Technology volunteer; American Heart Association 5K team captain; American Red Cross blood drive donor; KaBOOM Playground Build volunteer; YWCA Justice Facilitator; Open Hand Atlanta meal prep volunteer; ATL Community Food Bank volunteer; Hosea Feed the Hungry event volunteer; Out of Darkness human trafficking awareness volunteer; United Way campaign volunteer and event coordinator; APS Reading Buddy.  Sister Matheny also supports non-profit organizations such as St. Jude, Children’s Healthcare of Atlanta, Decatur Missions, Women’s Resource Center, She is Safe.  She recently accepted a nomination to serve on the Board of Directors of her Home Owners Association.  Whether with time, talent, or treasure, she seeks to be a blessing, as Galatians 6:10 instructs us “As we have therefore opportunity, let us do good unto all men, especially unto them who are of the household of faith.”
